NASA gave spiders caffeine. The webs they spun should worry you.
In 1995, researchers published a startling visual: a spider on caffeine can still spin — it just can't spin anything that works. Here's what that tells us about the way most of us dose our focus.
A spider's web is one of the most honest performance tests in nature. It is built once, in the dark, from memory and geometry — no revisions, no second attempt. If the spider's judgement is off by even a little, you can see it. The evidence hangs there in the morning light.
That is exactly why researchers started handing spiders drugs.
A 1995 issue of NASA Tech Briefs described work out of Marshall Space Flight Center in which spiders were dosed with a range of substances — caffeine, benzedrine, marijuana, chloral hydrate — and then left to spin. The idea was elegant: instead of guessing how a compound affects an organism, let the organism draw you a picture. The webs became the readout, scored for symmetry, spacing and how much of the pattern got finished at all.
The spiders on caffeine produced the worst webs of the group. Not sleepy webs. Not slow webs. Incoherent ones — threads strung at random angles, whole sections of the spiral abandoned, gaps a moth could stroll through. As Business Insider summarized the study, caffeine left the spiders least able to do the one thing they exist to do well.
Same spider. Same skill. Different chemistry.
The point of the experiment was never the spiders. It was the contrast — a clean baseline next to a stimulated one, with nowhere for the difference to hide.
Stimulation and coordination are not the same resource. Caffeine is generous with one and expensive with the other.
Four ways the same pattern shows up in humans
We don't spin webs, so our version of a broken spiral is harder to photograph. It looks like a re-read paragraph, a second pass at an email, a decision made twice. Here is where caffeine tends to charge interest.
-
1. The spike buys the crash
Caffeine blocks the adenosine that signals tiredness — it doesn't delete it. When the block wears off, everything that queued up arrives at once, usually in the middle of the afternoon you needed most.
-
2. It follows you to bed
Caffeine's half-life runs roughly five to six hours, so a 3 p.m. cup still has a meaningful share in your system at bedtime. Tomorrow's tiredness becomes today's second cup, and the loop closes.
-
3. The dose keeps climbing
Tolerance builds quickly. The amount that once felt like a lift becomes the amount required to feel normal — and "normal" starts costing 300 milligrams a day.
-
4. Alert is not the same as precise
This is the spider's lesson exactly. Jitter, restlessness and a racing start feel like productivity, but fine control — the part that keeps the spiral even — is the first thing to go.

The other option
Build the web on purpose
The useful takeaway from the spiders isn't "quit everything." It's that the input you choose decides the quality of the output — and that a stimulant strong enough to scramble a spiral is a strange tool for work that requires one.
Wyse No. 1 was built for that gap: a caffeine-free nootropic formula, clinically dosed, designed for steady clarity rather than a spike. Same formula in two formats — a 12 oz can to sip through a deep-work block, and a 4 oz shot for precision when the day won't slow down.
- Zero caffeine — no spike, no rebound to pay back
- Full clinical dose in both the can and the shot
- Built for daily use, not for emergencies

What people say after the switch
"Two cups by 10am used to be normal. A can of Founder's Blend instead, and the 3pm hole in my afternoon just isn't there."
"The shots live in my bag. Same focus as the can, and I finally sleep like someone who didn't drink anything at 4pm."
"Calm focus is the right description. I'm not wired, I'm just actually working — and the web I'm spinning holds together."
Questions, answered
Is Wyse really caffeine free?
Yes — zero milligrams in both the 12 oz can and the 4 oz shot. The formula is built to support steady focus without a stimulant spike, so there's nothing to rebound from.
What does it feel like compared to coffee?
Less like a switch flipping and more like the noise going down. Most people notice it within 15–45 minutes and describe it as calm, level clarity rather than a jolt.
Can or shot — which should I pick?
Same full dose in both. The can is the daily driver you sip through a morning or a deep-work block; the shot is the portable version for travel days and back-to-back schedules. The Starter Pack includes both if you'd rather test than choose.
